Cam and I snuck away to Napa for two glorious days last week. Nana Bethie was here with us and took care of John Shea so I could take Cam on an early birthday trip. Thank you, Nana!! I started planning this little getaway a few months ago… and it turned out that it couldn’t have come at a better time after our recent loss.
We stayed in a little b&b off the Silverado Wine Trail, owned by a very kind and hospitable couple, with only four rooms that opened onto a veranda overlooking the pool & jacuzzi (both of which we used morning and night!) and miles of vines. There was a huge fig tree outside our window, small olive grove, and fruit and citrus trees. The owner also has her own chocolate cookbook and breakfast came straight from it every morning. I cannot think of anyone who would want to start the day like that!? The first night there, with a glass of wine in hand, we walked the surrounding vineyards dreaming outloud about our own vineyard. Now it’s a matter of, Lord willing, waiting for that time in our lives, our savings to grow and our prayers to be answered!
We got to meet a handful of vintners from small, family-owned wineries and spent hours with each, drinking their amazing wines and picking their brains. Our absolute favorite was Rowland Cellars. Gerry & Linda were at the B&B one night and we sat out on the veranda with them learning and being inspired. I tried as hard as I could not to let my camera be an extension of my arm so I could just enjoy being with Cam — and success! — these are it. I love my husband more than anything in the world. Happy birthday this Thursday to him!!

Can I ask where your dress is from? Love that.

Hi Katie, it's from Asos!

I didn't think your photos could get more beautiful, but I have to say I think I see a difference with the camera upgrade! Beautiful as always. This retreat sounds so relaxing. How do you always pick out 5-star B&Bs?!
Amanda Marshall says
Ah thank you, Kaysie! I'm still trying to figure out all the settings… it is so different from Nikon!
Ha – tripadvisor!

That looks absolutely glorious – what a beautiful escape! And nightly wine tastings and conversations with vintners? Can I convince you to share the location?
Amanda Marshall says
Sorry, I meant to put a link for it — it's called Oak Knoll Inn. I booked it mid-week after someone had cancelled so we got a lot off (eek thankfully!) but I think it's much less expensive once the high season ends.

Fun! My husband and I are heading out to Napa this fall – my family lives in San Luis Obispo and we like to cruise up the coast and into the valley every now and then, and this looks like a wonderful place to linger for a bit!

Oh, my goodness. This looks too perfect! I went to Napa on a family vacation back when I was little, but still remember how beautiful it was. I'd love to go back now that I don't have to drink sparkling grape juice! Glad you got to get out for some r & r.
Amanda Marshall says
Thank you!! Hope you get to go back, too.

Hi Amanda, I am an infrequent commenter, but I am looking for some travel advice. My husband and I are planning a trip to Monterey/Napa for the middle of September, but are worried about the drought/fires. All of your pictures around Monterey and Napa look gorgeous, but we were still wondering if now would be a good time to go or if we should postpone and wait for better weather. That B&B looks so serene!
Amanda Marshall says
Hi Robyn… despite the drought it's still a beautiful time here — September I think (If I remember correctly! It's been so long since I've lived in Ca!) is Indian Summer when it's usually the hottest – atleast it was in Santa Barbara growing up and I've heard is the same for the Monterey area. You can email me if you want to talk more!
