you would not believe how clear the turquoise water is!
we spent hours snorkeling, pointing out the most intensely bright fish to each other, swimming in schools all around us.
at one point I made Cam hold my hand so we could marvel together and not have to keep pinching each others bums or going above water to yell, “WOW, did you see THAT!”

we also swam, played on the beach, explored the islands, picnicked, and napped.
oh it was so glorious.
{my lovey hiding in the shade}
we stayed in a little hole in the wall ryokan, which is a traditional japanese inn, often an extension of the owner’s home. we slept in a tiny tatami mat room in which you both sleep and eat on the floor. it’s empty except for a short, small table they pull out for meals, and the futons they lay out for bed time.
for breaky: they made us and their other japanese guests homemade fried eggs, pork, rice, octopus, miso soup, and green tea. {haha, yes, octopus!}
for dinner: a freshly caught fish (served as a fish- head and tail intact.. and SO delicious!), sashimi, tofu, breaded pork, rice, seaweed, and sliced guava. everything was local and amazing.
there’s only 600 people spread between three villages that live on zamami & they are just like okinawans: friendly, hilarious, silly unaware of themselves, and so hospitable. the pace was even slower though, and their skin color was much darker. like here, we saw 100 year old men leisurely riding around on bikes, nodding at you in acknowledgement. love that.
we had an absolutely incredible time together!! … and still can’t believe this place exists so far off of the well-known travel grid.
but maybe that’s part of the magic of it.
